60-year-old Uncle Tang suffered cardiac arrest after thrombolytic surgery for acute cerebral infarction and coma. Although he was resuscitated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he remained comatose, quadriplegic, and febrile. He was transferred to our intensive care unit for hyperbaric oxygen awakening therapy.

We administered intensive critical care and adjusted the anti-infective regimen multiple times, which led to an improvement in his fever. Early hyperbaric oxygen therapy was initiated:

After 8 sessions: His right upper limb could be slowly raised to his chest.

After 19 sessions: He showed tearful reactions when seeing his family.

After 22 sessions: He was able to hold an electric shaver and shave.

After 39 sessions: He regained consciousness.

Hyperbaric oxygen is effective in the treatment of cerebral infarction. Its mechanisms include: increasing the partial pressure and content of oxygen in brain tissue, improving oxygen supply to the ischemic penumbra, promoting the recovery of brain tissue function, reducing cerebral edema, and facilitating the establishment of collateral circulation.

The combination of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the basis of comprehensive treatment yields very significant results in cerebral resuscitation. Hyperbaric oxygen can increase the blood oxygen content throughout the body, enhance oxygen supply to brain tissue, promote the repair of nerve cells, and is highly effective in the treatment of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
